After our holiday in the Dominican Republic,
we developed a check list of things that travellers
may find useful to do or take with them for their
vacation in any location such as this.
- sunscreen - that's just obvious - but waterproof - and how about sweatproof?
- insect repellent - although we weren't bothered by bugs
- calomine lotion
- umbrella, rain hat or rain poncho - it rains there
- holiday address book - you will meet lots of nice people
- your own address card - to give to some of those nice people
- email information - how to access your own - addresses for those you may want
to contact while you are away - you may not be able to get through on the phone
- Pepto Bismol
- gifts such as small toys, lipsticks, candies, perfumes, school supplies
- Spanish dictionary - although we were fine without it
- something to massage into sore muscles - our bed was incredibly hard & uncomfortable
- small flashlight to carry with you - there are brief power outages
- candles - for those same power problems
- swim shoes - for swimming in the ocean
- There were so many weddings with the receptions in the restaurants
where we were eating. It would have been a nice surprise to have a small
gift for the new bride and groom.
Things to research and know about:
- currency exchange - create a card with the rates & have it laminated
- tours available - research before - find out where to go and what to
expect to pay to get there. The tours from the resort are not always the
most economical, but they are safe. One group I know spent a day touring
in a taxi - cost the four of them $35 total. The driver stayed with them
for the entire day.
We rented fins to use for snorkelling at Sosua. The nice lady at the
shop wanted something for a deposit - such as our passport??? - or our
room key??? - we weren't willing to risk parting with anything such as
that - we left our watches.
